Colerain Boosters

  • •Volunteer Organization founded in 1948
  • •Goal – provide students with facilities and opportunities to excel and represent Colerain High School in a positive manner
  • •Have purchased uniforms for the band and performing arts groups, supported Student Council activities, and a wide variety of clubs and athletic teams over the years
  • •Have raised and contributed over $2,000,000

Capital Improvements campaign Goals

  • •Identify initiatives that will further enhance the campus at Colerain High School and enable its students to excel in the classroom, in the performing arts, and in athletics.
  • •Increase Booster participation by focusing on projects that will impact the greatest number of students.
  • •Continue the development of strategic partnerships with community businesses to maximize fundraising potential.
  • •Provide community organizations opportunities to further benefit from the campus at Colerain High School.

Issues

Extracurricular activities for students have grown substantially since the 1960s

  • The number of teams has increased from 14 to 43.
  • Colerain’s competition and practice facilities support over 800 student athletes plus 150 students in performing arts.
  • –This does not include students participating in athletics and performing arts at White Oak and Colerain Middle Schools.
•There are not enough practice fields available.
  • –Groups are required to practice at inopportune times or locations.
  • –Physical Education classes have limited opportunities to conduct classes outdoors due to weather and field conditions.
  • –Practice and competition surfaces frequently suffer from overuse.
  • –There is little time for fields to dry and recover after inclement weather due to the number of groups needing to use the fields.

Available options to address this problem are limited.

  • –Cost of acquiring additional land, which is in short supply in the community, is prohibitive.
  • –Extracurricular activities should occur on school grounds rather than having to address logistical, safety, and cost concerns of transporting students to other venues for practice or competition.

Cost of Improving Existing Stadium Surface

  • •Add additional drainage
  • •Re-grade
  • •Re-sod
  • •Cost: $75,000 – $100,000
  • •This would need to be done every 3 – 4 years to maintain proper drainage and turf consistency
  • •Stadium facility continues to be used less than 20 times per year, weather permitting
  • •Eliminates community use

Opportunity

•An artificial playing surface can satisfy the needs of a number of student groups throughout the school year: Football, Band, PE Classes, Soccer, Baseball, Softball, Track
  • •Community Involvement – stadium would be available for a variety of uses year round
  • •Significant economic benefits can be derived for the School District and the Boosters
•School District
  • –Reduced Maintenance – new technology in artificial playing surfaces provides a cost effective alternative to natural grass
  • –Facility Rentals
•Boosters
  • –Increased concession stand income as a result of additional events being hosted in the stadium

Background

•There are basically four types of fields that are used for athletic purposes:
  1. –Soil Field- Colerain Stadium
  2. –Sand Base Field- Paul Brown Stadium (now being replaced with an artificial surface)
  3. –Astroturf - The old Riverfront
  4. –Filled Turf- New to market
•“Filled systems consists of loose laid rubber within a fiber mat.  The mat is installed over a compacted sub-grade of free draining rock material and a sub-drain system.  The rubber serves as shock-absorption.  The result is a surface that approximates the traction, bounce and feel of natural grass.”   A comparison of Filled Artificial Turf by Nicholas Wilson, ASLA

Technology

Artificial Playing Surfaces have improved and evolved during the past 10 years
  • •Surface more similar to a grass field than AstroTurf
  • •Surface is consistent at all times
  • –Loose turf and bare spots are non-existent
  • –Field drains quickly after heavy rainfall
  • •Injury risk is reduced
  • •Artificial Surfaces are being widely adopted at High Schools throughout the Greater Cincinnati area

Immediate Benefits to Colerain

  • •Dramatically reduces overall maintenance costs
  • •Maximizes the opportunities for school and community use of the facility – “unlimited” use dramatically reduces the “cost per event.”
  • •Marching Band never excluded from playing at events due to wet or muddy conditions.
  • •Marching Band will have a safe area for practice.
  • •Improved Track and Field Facility.
  • •Provides immediate venue for all community teams.
  • •Additional concession stand revenue as a result of facility rentals.
  • •Additional use creates better opportunity for corporate sponsorships.

Faculty/Staff Input

"We are Colerain!  These words speak volumes about our community.  The pride and tradition that exists within our schools and neighborhood are second to none.  The installation of a safe, consistent playing surface is critical, but more than anything else, this is a further testament to our students and the community to say ‘we are special’.  When people ask why?  We should simply reply… We are Colerain!” Kerry Coombs – Head Football Coach Colerain High School

"Installation of an artificial playing surface would eliminate safety concerns as related to the Marching Band practicing on the front parking lot in the evenings.  Additionally, the students would benefit from being able to practice in the venue where performances occur.  This will also help the Band attract and retain students.”  David Smith – Marching Band Director Colerain High School

•“An artificial field surface on campus will greatly influence and enhance the Physical Education program at Colerain.  The opportunity to place Physical Education students on a safe and reliable playing surface is in the best interest of the students and the school as a whole.  Time will be saved as related to field preparation and can be shifted to individual instruction.”  Dan Merkt – Physical Education Department Chairperson Colerain High School

•“An artificial playing surface would benefit the soccer program by providing an on campus venue on which to practice for upcoming games contested on turf.  It would also give us the option to play matches that otherwise would be cancelled due to dangerous field conditions.” Paul Reedy – Head Boys Soccer Coach Colerain High School

•“The Soccer program will benefit by being able to train on a consistent surface.  This will help our players develop and refine skills that will enable them to compete at the highest level of competition.”  Sarah Fitzstephens – Head Girls Soccer Coach Colerain High School

“A new playing surface will be a tremendous asset to the Softball program.  No longer will wet, muddy fields prevent the team from practicing outside.  The surface will give our program an advantage that will enable us to compete at the highest levels.”  Tom Bolden – Head Softball Coach Colerain High School

•“The Baseball program would benefit from an artificial surface by being able to conduct tryouts and practices outdoors when the game field is unplayable due to rain and mud.  Additionally, this gives us an additional venue to conduct practices for all three levels of the program.”  Chris Newton – Head Baseball Coach Colerain High School

Community Input

“The Little Cards Youth Football and Cheerleading program serves approximately 300 children from ages 6 – 11.  Installation of an artificial surface at Colerain High School would provide an opportunity for our teams to experience the thrill of playing at one of the finest high school facilities in the Greater Cincinnati area.  No longer will we be required to travel to other communities to compete in first rate facilities.”  Everett Johnson – Little Cards Football Program

“What a great idea!  The installation of an artificial playing surface would greatly increase the number of recreational opportunities for the citizens of Colerain Township.” David L. Fogelsong – Colerain Township Administrator
